Asthma is one of the most common chronic inflammatory diseases and a lot of people suffer from it. An estimated number of twenty-three million adults have asthma. It does not only affect adults. In fact, more than nine million children suffer from asthma before they even finish their adolescent period. What is troubling is that the rate of asthma is increasing around the world.
Since asthma is a common condition, there are so many myths that revolve around it. Let’s take a look at what you should not easily believe in:
Asthma is just a psychological condition
There are those who believe that asthma is just a psychological condition. Various complications, including both environmental and genetic factors, cause asthma. Thus, it has to be treated seriously. Those who have asthma should consider take doctor-prescribed maintenance medicines and stay away from things that trigger attacks.
Smoking does not trigger asthma
A lot of people commit the mistake of smoking even if they are asthma patients. Thus, asthma patients have to stop smoking or simply stay away from any person who smokes. It should be noted that babies born to mothers who smoke have a very high chance of suffering from asthma.
Asthma can be cured
A person who has asthma could never be cured from that condition. However, that does not mean that asthma attacks could not be avoided. Good treatment and management is the key to a healthy life for those who have asthma. Symptoms might be gone but that does not mean that the asthma has been cured.
Asthma attacks are not serious
Asthma attacks refer to occurrences where the lungs’ airways swell or get stuffed with mucus. When the airways get blocked, oxygen would not be able to enter the lungs. Thus, asthma attacks could result in deaths.
Asthma could not play sports
There is also that common belief that asthma victims could not play sports. That is not true. Exercise is very important for anyone especially anybody who has asthma. However, medication might have to be taken before one would engage in physical activity. Experts say that the best sport for asthma patients is swimming.
Asthma patients should not keep furry pets
Aside from pet air, asthma could be triggered by various factors including mold, dust, and even certain scents. Asthma patients should not keep furry pets only if they are allergic to pet hair. A lot of asthma patients could live well even with pets.
